AWAKENING THE PROVERBS 31 MAN

A Call to Action for Today's Christian Men

At the tender age of twelve, my grandfather joined a rugged group of fearless sailors. He would spend his Summer living and working aboard a fishing schooner, sleeping in quarters called a forecastle. The forecastle was dark and hot as an oven, filled with foul air from unwashed bodies, diesel fumes, and salted fish. For the next sixty years, he never knew what it was to have idle hours.

In today's fast-paced world, a growing trend of sluggishness and inattention among men casts a long shadow over personal ambitions and the fabric of family and society. This crisis of commitment, marked by a retreat from the responsibilities and challenges that define a fulfilling life, is reshaping relationships, career paths, and community bonds.

Modern society presents unique challenges that can foster lethargy and even negligence, such as the instant gratification enabled by technology and the internet. Social media, gaming, and other digital distractions are all too often leading to procrastination and avoidance of more meaningful engagement. Also, there’s a rising trend of failure to launch syndrome, where adult men continue to rely on parental support, delaying significant life decisions and responsibilities like starting a career or family.

Superficiality in personal relationships can manifest as failure to commit to long-term relationships [traditional marriage], neglect of family duties, or lack of involvement in children’s lives. This behavior can stem from or lead to unstable family structures, affecting affecting partners and children emotionally and financially. Men who avoid commitment or household responsibilities contribute to a cycle of neglect that can perpetuate cycles of behavior in future generations. Remember, life skills are easier caught than taught.

"How about we reimagine Proverbs 31 and apply it to us men? I dare you."

Proverbs 31 expounds on the traits of an honorable woman. How about we reimagine Proverbs 31 and apply it to us men? I dare you.

So here goes: The Traits of a Proverbs 31 Man.

  • Diligent: Proverbs 31 praises the virtue of diligence and hard work. Contrast this with the pitfalls of lethargy.

Proverbs 31:13-14 - He shops around for the best products. He's like a trading ship that sails to faraway places and brings back exotic surprises.

Proverbs 31:15 - He’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast for his family and organizing his day.

Proverbs 31:17 - First thing in the morning, he dresses for work, rolls up his sleeves, eager to get started.

Proverbs 31:18 - He senses the worth of his work and is in no hurry to call it quits for the day.

Proverbs 31:27 - He keeps an eye on everyone in his household and keeps them all busy and productive.

  • Person of Integrity and Wisdom: Meditate on Proverbs verses praising wisdom and integrity. These traits are essential for personal growth and societal respect.

Proverbs 31:10-11 - A good man is hard to find and worth far more than gold. His wife trusts him without reserve and never has reason to regret it.

Proverbs 31:20 - He’s quick to assist anyone in need and reaches out to help the poor.

Proverbs 31:26 - He opens his mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on his tongue.

Proverbs 31:30 - Charm can mislead, and gorgeousness soon fades. The man to be admired and praised is the man who lives in the Fear-of-God.

Sluggishness can lead to significant personal consequences, even financial instability, and poor health, as highlighted in Proverbs 21:25- 26. It also damages relationships with family and friends as trust and dependability erode. Biblical narratives frequently illustrate the broader impact of individual irresponsibility, showing how community-wide issues can arise from the failures of men to live out their God- given assignment

"Incorporating diligence and responsibility into daily life can be transformative, and it begins with setting realistic, achievable goals."

Incorporating diligence and responsibility into daily life can be transformative, and it begins with setting realistic, achievable goals. Starting with small, daily tasks encourages a pattern of consistent responsibility that can expand into more significant areas of life. Additionally, the support of accountability partners, such as those found in church men's groups, can reinforce these efforts, providing motivation and feedback. Equally important is the role of spiritual growth in developing these virtues. Engaging in regular spiritual disciplines like prayer, scripture meditation, and community worship fosters a more profound sense of purpose and strengthens the commitment to live out these values.

The narrative of Proverbs 31 offers a timeless blueprint for diligence, integrity, and virtue, qualities that are just as applicable to men as to women. From a male perspective, embracing these characteristics can transform personal life and how one influences the family and community. By embodying the principles outlined in Proverbs 31—such as hard work, responsibility, and wisdom—men can lead by example, setting a high standard for ethical behavior and commitment.

I encourage you to pursue excellence in all areas of your life actively, step up as leaders in your communities and families, and fulfill your potential.
